There is very little in the way of French films on the general release circuit in South Africa but occassionally you will find the odd new French release at a so-called Art cinema - both Ster Kinekor (click on Cinema Nouveau) and Nu-metro have such cinemas.

French films- Films français

The various Alliances Françaises sometimes hold a film evening for it's members. In addition the Alliance also has a video and DVD library for use by its members.

Purchase your own

Another option for French movies it to buy your own from a reputed internet supplier such as Alapage.com. Their delivery costs are cheaper the more-you-buy and goods arrive in SA after around 10 days. They tend to be cheaper than using local stores who often have "cheap" australian imports of French movies - buyer beware. It is a good idea to try and get a multi-language version of a French film so that you have the option of the english soundtrack, but these are not always available on smaller budget films.

Get French TV

The preferred option used by French speakers is to sign up to a fully fledged satellite-based French TV service (the signal misses the entire Western Cape). More details can be found on our French TV - Télévision Française page.

Film festivals

Your last option is to wait for various annual film festivals at which you will often find French language films.

The best film festival for French films is the annual Air France Film Festival held at Hyde Park Nu-Metro (Johannesburg) towards the end of September.
