Apart from the free-to-air TV5 Monde Afrique offered on the DStv package (and available for FREE on the C-band NSS7 satellite together with France 24 [english or french], RTBF Sat, CNN International [english], Télé Congo, TVE International [spanish], Canal Algérie [arabic] and 2M Maroc Monde [arabic]) you can now sign up to a proper subscription-based satellite service totally in the French language.

French TV in South Africa - Télévision Française en Afrique du Sud

French language satellite-based TV is available in southern africa.

The area covered includes the northern part of South Africa, parts of Zambia, the whole of Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi, as well as a very small footprint in the DRC and in southern Tanzania.

Unfortunately the Western Cape area is not covered - see map.

There are more than 50 channels available including

13 general channels such as TF1, M6, W9, TF6 and RTL9
7 movie channels such as CinéCinema Premier and CinéCinema Famiz
2 news channels such as LCI
4 documentary channels such as Escales
6 sport channels such as Eurosport
4 children's channels such as Télétoon
3 music channels such as M6 Music Hits
19 radio stations including NRJ, Chérie FM, RTL, Europe1 and Radio Nostalgie

Apart from the usual monthly subsription fee you will need to purchase a decoder, smart card and 1 metre dish. The set-up time can be as short as 24 hours! Unlike DStv you are not forced to buy a new decoder every few years - if you need a new decoder to access new features they will swop it out free of charge!

The cost is less than you may think and it's subscription is cheaper than DStv to boot !

Go to the Parabole Réunion web site (in French) for more details - send them an email and they will give the contact number in southern Africa.
